Board of Directors

A full one-third of our board members are current and former Foundation Communities residents.

Tom Chmielewski, Chair

VP Strategic Sales, Icontrol Networks Inc.

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

Foundation Communities provides a comfortable, affordable home to Austin’s working families who otherwise would be pushed out of our community. I believe our cities are best when we are inclusive. Equally important, Foundation Communities provides opportunities to our very deserving neighbors who might not have been handed the same benefits in life as others. I’m proud to support an organization that provides opportunities for families and individuals to better themselves.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Hiking the Hill Country with my family and swimming in Barton Springs and the lakes and rivers of the Hill Country.

Socar Chatmon-Thomas

President / CEO, Elegant Estates by Auction

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

As a real estate broker, I see the need for affordable housing in the Austin area. I am also inspired and amazed at how adept the Foundation Communities staff is at combining all of the funding mechanisms which allow us to purchase land and build properties to continue our mission of helping underserved families. I will continue to support Foundation Communities and serve on the board in some capacity as long as they’ll have me!

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Running around Town Lake/Lady Bird Lake, going for a swim in Deep Eddy Pool, listening to live music while watching the sunset at the Oasis and grabbing a scoop of Amy’s Ice Cream along the way, and tasting different exotic food combinations from some of our local food truck vendors. Austin is a great place to live!

I was formerly a Foundation Communities resident. We have been so blessed by this organization, and I wanted to be a part of helping to bless others.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

My family loves hiking, biking, and all things outdoors. As a home school mom, I also love all of the educational opportunities our city offers – we never have a shortage of field trip ideas.

Kellee Coleman

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

I serve on Foundation Communities’ board because they are one of the most important organizations in Austin and one of a few organizations specifically committed to this work. Austin is becoming less and less affordable, making the work Foundation Communities does vital. As a resident who benefited from the Children’s Home Initiative program, free tax preparation services, Free Minds, etc., serving on the board is a way for me to give the perspective of a resident.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

My three kiddos and I enjoy relaxing at home or going to the park if it’s not too hot.

Adrianna Cuéllar Rojas

President & CEO, United Ways of Texas

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

For over 16 years I worked for a family foundation here in Texas that afforded me the opportunity to work with hundreds of nonprofits across the state, including Foundation Communities. There are many, many nonprofits working hard every day to change lives for the better – but few have such a positive reputation and make such a significant impact as Foundation Communities. To now be a part of the board, to help the organization to continue to provide such critical services to so many in Austin and North Texas is truly an honor!

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Spending time with our little boys here in Austin, with their cousins and grandparents, as well as many good friends! And exploring the city and enjoying all that Central Texas has to offer!

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

Foundation Communities addresses life’s basic needs: housing, education, financial stability, and health. I’m honored to be a part of an organization that is a regional and national benchmark for addressing these needs in a compassionate and holistic manner.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

It’s a blessing that Austin is considered one of our nation’s volunteer capitals. In addition to Foundation Communities, I enjoy volunteering with Rodeo Austin and parent support groups at my grandson’s middle school.

Dalton Duffie

Assistant Manager, Salvation Army

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

For me it is a unique opportunity to have a chance to help others get the same help I have been given to turn my life around. To help someone who has been a drug addict and/or alcoholic find a new way of life, to help that person regain his/her self esteem, and to assist with housing, which is the ultimate step back into society and being a productive citizen again in life, to me that is the most gratifying feeling one can get in this life.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Walking the hike and bike trails. Going to concerts all over our city. The Pecan Street festival. And going to dinner and the movies!

Foundation Communities provides a safe place to call home for so many people, as well as a “hand up” not a “hand out.” The passion of the board, the staff, and the volunteers is amazing!

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Running, biking, enjoying Austin’s parks and lakes with my dogs, eating, drinking, listening to music and cheering on the Texas Longhorns!

Leslie Pearson

CPA, Leslie Pearson & Associates, P.C.

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

I started out as a tax center volunteer the first year Foundation Communities took ownership of the city’s program. I was so impressed with the staff and their enthusiasm. I love the idea of helping people succeed and improving their lives rather than just giving them a handout.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Since I spend a lot of my time in an office, sitting in front of a computer, I love to be outdoors in my free time. I love to garden and recently have taken up golf and cycling.

Jason Qunell

Senior Vice President, Capital One Bank

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

Foundation Communities tackles one of Austin’s biggest challenges, affordability, but with a sustainable approach. Residents don’t only get an affordable place to call home but are also provided resources to promote stability and success. That is an approach that I’m proud to be a part of because it creates a long term solution to affordability.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Cycling. Austin has some of the best roads and trails and a community that promotes and supports cycling.

Anna Sanchez

Vice President Business Banking Manager, Wells Fargo Bank

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

I serve on this board because I have a passion for affordable housing. I’ve always believed that people should have the opportunity to live in a safe and affordable community. That’s why early in my career I learned as a lender about ways to support developers with financing for the construction of these spaces. Affordable housing is a dream for a lot of people and it brings me joy knowing that I helped in a very small way to make that dream come true. Foundation Communities is one of the finest affordable housing developers I have seen throughout my career.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

I’m a native Austinite. I mostly enjoy live music venues, Zilker Park, Lake Travis and Mt Bonnell, but there’s nothing like running around Lady Bird Lake at dusk just after the sun sets and it’s almost dark. That’s when the city lights turn on. It’s the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen.

David Tandy

CEO, Gracy Title

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

I wanted to work with an organization that provided a comprehensive solution to affordable housing. Low-income working families in Austin face a critical challenge that cannot be solved with small projects. Austin needs an organization like Foundation Communities that can provide a credible long term solution for the 50,000 low-income families in Austin.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Anything outdoors: from the hike and bike trails to activities on the lakes.

Alicia A Wong

Customer Assistance, Federal Government Employee

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

Foundation Communities is a homegrown nonprofit that asks pressing questions, such as: What kind of housing can we provide that is affordable and empowers families and communities to succeed? When profit is not the motive, but the welfare of the community is the goal, it opens up the opportunity to make a difference. I am in awe of the vision and commitment of the staff, the energy and spirit of donors and volunteers, and the integrity at the core of each decision made at the board level.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

I like to eat. A lot. That is one thing that reassured me when moving here from San Francisco – endless opportunities to sample new cuisine. I love Zilker, kayaking, Red Bud Trail going to Oyster Landing. My other hobby is perusing used book stores in the hopes of discovering authors with a long list of published works that I can devour.
