Volunteer with Community Tax Centers

Watch the video below to hear why people volunteer with our Community Tax Centers!

We are actively recruiting community members to join our corps of 600 volunteers at the Community Tax Centers! You can be part of the team that helps over 20,000 low-income households with free tax preparation services, resulting in over $36 million in refunds returned to the local economy.

No experience in accounting is required. We will provide all the training you need to become certified and will continue to support you with on-site staff throughout the tax season.

Ways You Can Volunteer

  • Volunteer Tax Preparer
  • Client Liaison
  • Translator

Volunteer Preparer: Volunteers work directly with families to file their tax returns at one of our tax centers. Tax Preparers walk our clients through the tax preparation process and prepare returns using TaxWise software. We teach you everything you need to know in a required training (up to 12 hours for new volunteers). After training, volunteers complete an IRS Volunteer Tax Preparer certification test and are ready to start filing returns!

Client Liaison: As the first person a taxpayer encounters, the Client Liaison welcomes clients to the tax center, screens for eligibility and preparedness, collects documents, and assembles the information necessary for the Tax Preparer to complete the tax return in an efficient manner. The Client Liaison plays a critical role in ensuring that clients have a quality experience. Volunteers will participate in a required 2-hour training online.

Translator: 36% of Community Tax Center clients speak only Spanish!  We are in great need of bilingual volunteers to help clients and our volunteer tax preparers communicate effectively. Translators help ensure that the taxpayers understand their tax return and their tax obligations. Volunteers will participate in a required 2-hour training online.

Time Commitment

The Community Tax Centers are open mid-January to the tax filing deadline (April 18 for 2016).

Training

Training opportunities for Tax Preparers have passed for the 2016 tax season. But you can still join us as a Client Liaison or Translator. Join us now or sign up to receive updates for the next tax season by completing the volunteer application.

Training for Client Liaisons and Translators (online training)

Client Liaisons and Translators set the tone for a client’s experience at a Community Tax Center and are critical to helping the tax preparation process run smoothly.  Complete this training to learn how to do these important jobs and what’s new for the tax season. Sign up to receive the training link by completing the volunteer application.

Testing Support Sessions

In the weeks prior to the tax season, we will provide open hours in our computer lab for the Tax Preparer certification test. We will not be able to give you the answers to the test, but we will help guide you to a passing score.
