Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

As a volunteer for several years in the financial stability programs of Foundation Communities, I have been inspired by the desire of clients to improve their lives, by the commitment and knowledge of the Foundation Communities staff, and by the caliber and dedication of other volunteers. The more I learn about this organization, the more impressed I am by the quality of the housing and support services that allow fellow Austinites to provide safe, affordable homes for their children, find jobs, get an education, or live a healthier lifestyle. It is an honor to be on the board of an organization that offers such an optimistic view of individual potential and of the future of Austin.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

My favorite place in Austin is the trail at Lady Bird Lake. I also love the ACL Music Fest held every fall at Zilker Park and the art festival downtown every spring. I love being outdoors.

After attending the Foundation Communities luncheon as a guest in 2011, I was blown away with their work and their mission to provide safe, affordable housing in Austin.  Now, Foundation Communities has grown tremendously and has beautiful housing all over Austin that benefit our wonderful city as a whole.  Foundation Communities provides hope and inspiration to be your best self. I am honored and proud to support Foundation Communities on a personal level, at a company level, and now at the Board level.

Perla Cavazos

Director of Government Affairs, Central Health

Why did you choose to serve on our board / what inspires you about our work?

Twenty years ago I moved to Austin after graduating from college to work for an affordable housing organization. That experience opened my eyes to the importance of helping lift up our low-income neighbors by providing quality, affordable housing – as well as wrap around services. I learned about Foundation Communities during that time and I have followed their work and volunteered with this wonderful organization over the past two decades. It is an honor to serve on the Board of Directors and be part of the affordability solution for our community.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Some of my most favorite things to do in Austin are to walk or run around Lady Bird Lake and hang out with friends and family at the many great restaurants around town.

Andrew Clements

Project Manager, City of Austin

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

I have been impressed with Foundation Communities since my first exposure (attending the annual fundraising luncheon in 2010); and as an architect I am especially impressed with the high-quality of design and concern for environmental sustainability incorporated into FC communities. In the intervening years I have learned how many more valuable community services are offered; and I want to do all I can to advance such a great organization that works so ably to provide needed affordable housing and holistic support services to residents of Austin and North Texas.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

I like to walk and bike around my neighborhood, and garden in my backyard. My wife, Amy, and I (of course) have our favorite Austin restaurants; and we enjoy walking around Town Lake, going to movies at the Alamo Drafthouse, and traveling (when we leave Austin!).

Adrianna Cuéllar Rojas

President & CEO, United Ways of Texas

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

Foundation Communities takes a unique approach to its work. It recognizes that it’s not just about housing, it’s about supporting the whole person to ensure that they can be successful in life. That comprehensive approach is what makes FC’s work transformative in people’s lives. And its what gives each of our residents the dignity and respect that they deserve. Its humbling to be part of such work, and I am truly honored to be on the board of this organization.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

I don’t get to do it often, but love to kayak on Lady Bird Lake with our boys. Listening to the sounds of the city while on the water is very peaceful! In general, I enjoy any opportunity to spend time with my family exploring this wonderful city!

Angelique Goodnough

Executive Vice President, Roscoe Properties

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

I chose to be considered for the Foundation Community Board because I understand how special the services that FC offers are for our community. I have been a property manager all my adult life and FC goes beyond providing housing and provides all of the additional support that make for a successful family or individual. I also believe that FC is a good steward of the funds they receive and the quality of the communities will sustain the program for the long term.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Spend the morning boating on Lake Travis, especially in June, July and August! I also enjoy walking my dogs in Zilker Park or around Lady Bird Lake.

I’m honored to serve on the board.

Selina Serna

Sr. Coordinator, Growth & Business Development Team, Whole Foods Market

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

As a long-time FC volunteer, I’ve seen first-hand the gratitude and sheer relief residents feel from having someone on their side, whether it’s having help with crazy-complicated tax returns or on-site childcare so you know your children are safe, well-cared for and getting their homework done until you can get home from work. The extensive, on-site support services offered by FC give residents the skills and support they need to turn their lives around and it’s my privilege to serve on their board.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Hiking in the hill country, sailing Lake Travis, enjoying live music and drinking margaritas with good friends!

David Hart

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

The short answer, “Because I was asked to serve”. I used to be on the CommUnityCare Board as their member having previously experienced homelessness, and would occasionally go to Central Health Board meetings. There I would often meet Walter Moreau, Foundation Communities’ CEO. Walter found out that I was a resident at one of the Foundation Communities SROs. I was about to transition off the CommUnityCare Board after 5 years, and he dangled joining Foundation Communities’ Board. It was perfect timing, for me to support an organization in which I had a great deal of respect. I had previous experience translating my life experiences and experiences as homeless and then a resident, into terms my fellow board members could understand. I could serve.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

I like to walk around the river’s boardwalk. Especially on weekends when I can see all the people getting out to enjoy life in Austin.

Leslie Davis

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

I chose to serve on the board of FC because, I once was a client in the CHI program & I saw how they help me and so many others gain self-sufficiency. In return, I wanted to give back to my community and help it become a better place to live. FC inspires me just to be a better person overall. If I’m better, I can better serve my community.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Things I love to do in Austin are, swimming at the local natural swimming spots. Eating at the diverse eateries, talking walks in the park, & just lounging around at home.
