Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

I have been a quiet supporter of Foundation Communities since I was invited to attend their fundraising luncheon in 2019. I knew right away that I wanted to be involved with this organization. In my work I have direct exposure to the challenges of housing affordability and income disparities, which continue to expand in Austin year after year. FC’s work is more critical than ever in our growing city, and I have been inspired by the myriad of ways that it succeeds in improving people’s lives throughout Austin. The more I learn, the more connected I feel to its mission and the invaluable impact it has on our community. I feel honored to serve such a vibrant, hardworking group that is steadfast in keeping Austin’s humanity and diversity thriving.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

I love discovering all of the new restaurants around town, exploring unfrequented water holes and trails, experimenting with all kinds of exercise, cooking at home, and lazy Friday nights watching old movies with my family.

Licensed Massage Therapist / Foundation Communities Resident

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work

In Minnesota I spent 10 years working in homeless shelters, supporting people that were facing housing challenges, for a variety of reasons.  Then when I moved to Austin, I lived and worked on-site at a permanent supportive housing complex, with veterans and low-income households.  Ten years later, I found myself on the other side of this, facing housing challenges myself, as a single mom.   Because of FC, I was able to stay in the Austin area (which was very important for my family, because of my two little daughters’ special health needs), and begin working toward building a life for my girls.  I love that FC isn’t solely focused on affordable housing, because there’s so much more that goes into self-sufficiency… All of the wrap-around services are key in going from nearly homeless to living a comfortable and secure life!

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Town lake trail!  My younger daughter is non-mobile, but very much enjoys being outside in nature, so we got ourselves an off-roading medical stroller, and we LOVE to be out on the trails!   Both of my girls LOVE music, so we see live music at least once each week, more often if we can!  I’m a massage therapist, and a graduate student in Chinese medical school, and really enjoy the health-conscious, holistic vibe in Austin.

The amount of services provided to residents, quality of development, outstanding staff, the genuine care to better residents lives, and the community feel the apartments provide is unmatched in the affordable housing industry.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Walk the hike & bike trail and greenbelt with my wife, daughter, and two golden retrievers. Exploring the ever changing food scene. Enjoying a patio beer. Going to Austin FC games. Attending live concerts.
