Jewel Arrington

Retired Financial Advisor, Foundation Communities Volunteer

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

As a volunteer for several years in the financial stability programs of Foundation Communities, I have been inspired by the desire of clients to improve their lives, by the commitment and knowledge of the Foundation Communities staff, and by the caliber and dedication of other volunteers. The more I learn about this organization, the more impressed I am by the quality of the housing and support services that allow fellow Austinites to provide safe, affordable homes for their children, find jobs, get an education, or live a healthier lifestyle. It is an honor to be on the board of an organization that offers such an optimistic view of individual potential and of the future of Austin.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

My favorite place in Austin is the trail at Lady Bird Lake. I also love the ACL Music Fest held every fall at Zilker Park and the art festival downtown every spring. I love being outdoors.

Yvette Flores

Principal / Broker, Realty Austin

Why did you choose to serve on our board / what inspires you about our work?

After attending the Foundation Communities luncheon as a guest in 2011, I was blown away with their work and their mission to provide safe, affordable housing in Austin.  Now, Foundation Communities has grown tremendously and has beautiful housing all over Austin that benefit our wonderful city as a whole.  Foundation Communities provides hope and inspiration to be your best self. I am honored and proud to support Foundation Communities on a personal level, at a company level, and now at the Board level.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

I love hanging out on Lake Austin. I enjoy attending live music venues, hiking Austin’s numerous trails, and traveling.

Andrew Clements

Project Manager, City of Austin

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

I have been impressed with Foundation Communities since my first exposure (attending the annual fundraising luncheon in 2010); and as an architect I am especially impressed with the high-quality of design and concern for environmental sustainability incorporated into FC communities. In the intervening years I have learned how many more valuable community services are offered; and I want to do all I can to advance such a great organization that works so ably to provide needed affordable housing and holistic support services to residents of Austin and North Texas.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

I like to walk and bike around my neighborhood, and garden in my backyard. My wife, Amy, and I (of course) have our favorite Austin restaurants; and we enjoy walking around Town Lake, going to movies at the Alamo Drafthouse, and traveling (when we leave Austin!).

Erika Levack

Real Estate Broker Associate at Compass

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

I have been a quiet supporter of Foundation Communities since I was invited to attend their fundraising luncheon in 2019. I knew right away that I wanted to be involved with this organization. In my work I have direct exposure to the challenges of housing affordability and income disparities, which continue to expand in Austin year after year. FC’s work is more critical than ever in our growing city, and I have been inspired by the myriad of ways that it succeeds in improving people’s lives throughout Austin. The more I learn, the more connected I feel to its mission and the invaluable impact it has on our community. I feel honored to serve such a vibrant, hardworking group that is steadfast in keeping Austin’s humanity and diversity thriving.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

I love discovering all of the new restaurants around town, exploring unfrequented water holes and trails, experimenting with all kinds of exercise, cooking at home, and lazy Friday nights watching old movies with my family.

Angelique Goodnough

Executive Vice President, Roscoe Properties

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

I chose to be considered for the Foundation Community Board because I understand how special the services that FC offers are for our community. I have been a property manager all my adult life and FC goes beyond providing housing and provides all of the additional support that make for a successful family or individual. I also believe that FC is a good steward of the funds they receive and the quality of the communities will sustain the program for the long term.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Spend the morning boating on Lake Travis, especially in June, July and August! I also enjoy walking my dogs in Zilker Park or around Lady Bird Lake.

When it isn’t too hot, I love outdoor walks in the many green spaces around town, as well as exploring new restaurants. Any community art show is a must!

Selina Serna

Sr. Coordinator, Growth & Business Development Team, Whole Foods Market

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

As a long-time FC volunteer, I’ve seen first-hand the gratitude and sheer relief residents feel from having someone on their side, whether it’s having help with crazy-complicated tax returns or on-site childcare so you know your children are safe, well-cared for and getting their homework done until you can get home from work. The extensive, on-site support services offered by FC give residents the skills and support they need to turn their lives around and it’s my privilege to serve on their board.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Hiking in the hill country, sailing Lake Travis, enjoying live music and drinking margaritas with good friends!

David Hart

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work?

The short answer, “Because I was asked to serve”. I used to be on the CommUnityCare Board as their member having previously experienced homelessness, and would occasionally go to Central Health Board meetings. There I would often meet Walter Moreau, Foundation Communities’ CEO. Walter found out that I was a resident at one of the Foundation Communities SROs. I was about to transition off the CommUnityCare Board after 5 years, and he dangled joining Foundation Communities’ Board. It was perfect timing, for me to support an organization in which I had a great deal of respect. I had previous experience translating my life experiences and experiences as homeless and then a resident, into terms my fellow board members could understand. I could serve.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

I like to walk around the river’s boardwalk. Especially on weekends when I can see all the people getting out to enjoy life in Austin.

Vice President, Affordable Housing, BWE

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work

I’ve volunteered for Foundation Communities in various capacities over the years, and the more involved I’ve become, the more impressed I am with the depth of the organization. The amount of services provided to residents, quality of development, outstanding staff, the genuine care to better residents lives, and the community feel the apartments provide is unmatched in the affordable housing industry.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Walk the hike & bike trail and greenbelt with my wife, daughter, and two golden retrievers. Exploring the ever changing food scene. Enjoying a patio beer. Going to Austin FC games. Attending live concerts.

Ellie Acuña

Foundation Communities Resident

Why did you choose to serve on our board and what inspires you about our work

In Minnesota I spent 10 years working in homeless shelters, supporting people that were facing housing challenges, for a variety of reasons.  Then when I moved to Austin, I lived and worked on-site at a permanent supportive housing complex, with veterans and low-income households.  Ten years later, I found myself on the other side of this, facing housing challenges myself, as a single mom.   Because of FC, I was able to stay in the Austin area (which was very important for my family, because of my two little daughters’ special health needs), and begin working toward building a life for my girls.  I love that FC isn’t solely focused on affordable housing, because there’s so much more that goes into self-sufficiency… All of the wrap-around services are key in going from nearly homeless to living a comfortable and secure life!

What are some of your favorite things to do in Austin?

Town lake trail!  My younger daughter is non-mobile, but very much enjoys being outside in nature, so we got ourselves an off-roading medical stroller, and we LOVE to be out on the trails!   Both of my girls LOVE music, so we see live music at least once each week, more often if we can!  I’m a massage therapist, and a graduate student in Chinese medical school, and really enjoy the health-conscious, holistic vibe in Austin.
